What was I working on for the Drawing Machines Final?

Here’s the idea: computers are extremely good at simulating things. We create simulacra of everything before creating the final object. The printed page is simulated on-screen before ink is put to paper. Designers simulate books, furniture, cars. Engineers and architects simulate buildings and planes and cars. Physicists simulate the universe. We’re all pretty sure that computers can use that same simulation trait to create interesting artworks. How though? I set out to create some software tools that would help me generate art that I actually think is fun and interesting. Here are a couple pieces I liked.

Melt Triptych

The Melt Triptych is a series of videos created using Processing and a physics engine. The pictures literally melt, and flow to the bottom of the screen. These are meant to be projected side-by side, with the portrait in the middle and a landscape projected on each side. Click on the thumbnails to see the actual videos on Vimeo.com

The Beardinator

The Beardinator is an awesome little app that allows you to draw pseudo-realistic hair on any image you like. You have your pick from four different lengths, and can select any color in the image itself to use for the hair. You need to see the video to appreciate it.

Muralizer Awesome project on Kickstarter to build a robot that can print digital art on walls at large scale. This seems to relate to a couple of the final project proposals people mentioned in class yesterday.:

“Imagine your digital art as a full-scale mural. Now, imagine you had a robot that could draw it on the wall for you. Muralizer is that robot, and I want to give you one of your own.

Muralizer aims to cover large walls with digital art. There is currently a working prototype and a set of open plans. Anyone can make their own muralizer by downloading the plans, ordering parts from a half-dozen places on the internet, spending a bunch of time tweaking things, and then customizing their art to better fit it. ”

Looks like they’ve raised only $385 of the $4k they’re going for. Maybe to contribute?
